we don't need better weapons, we need peace. Peace. We all come from one place and return to it, whatever it may be. We are all in this together. Our only enemy is our own lack of understanding, our own fear, our own selves. There is no good reason for us to be hurting each other so that politicians can have more power. Enough already. Peace.

When the thugs that keep attacking us start singing kumbia and learn to get along better, then we won't have to keep developing bigger guns. Until then, I'll feel a whole lot better packing heat!

No; for me the theory is still that peace is only secure when you can defend yourself.

Peace being the goal; but a sane defense being the method.

    Does it work in practice?

    Sometimes.

    Does pacifism work in practice?

    Sometimes not.

Did anyone mention that the shock wave from that type of weapon mulches biological matter? That is a big bad WMD.

We should take a moment to remember that a lot of military tech has found new, peacefull uses. If we were to aim one of these straight up, say along a cable stretching from the ground up through the jetstream and along a series of huuuuge hydrogen filled cabon fiber spheres way up above any weather effects, imagine what kind of payloads could reach escape volocity on a railgun 20-30 mile long. Cover the spheres with solar panels and we won't even have to burn anything to get the energy for the launch.

To me this one of those "you gotta be kiddin" stories. I was told once that if a meteorite enters the earths atmosphere it has a speed of around 18,000 mph and when it hits the earth it does considerable damage, so if I understand this correctly we are going to lob something at someone at a speed of maybe 4000 mph.

I guess we could have expected something as shocking as this from those who develope weapons, the idea of collateral damage has never meant anything to them. OH! but wait, it is enviromentally friendly, guess that makes it acceptable.

It's early yet kids. The technology will continue to develop. I wouldn't get too upset about this until we get developmental models.

              Freakin' cool technology, though.

There are also a lot of peaceful applications of magnetic rail technology. As usual, it takes weaponizing to get the R&D done, but we'll be glad the work got done, at any rate. It's potentially a clean way to launch satellites, for one thing.
