What most people don't know is that millions of computers have been taken over by hackers. People don't know it but they can have a computer that is part of a bot net. That is a lot of computers that are slaved to a hacker. The FBI recently shut down a man that controlled over a million other computers. One of the things they use other peoples computers for is to send spam. They also use them to overwhelm sites causing a "denial of service" problem. That happens when a site is so overloaded with requests that it just shuts down.
