The article states that encryption 'condenses' the data. That has not been my experience. In general, if you can end up with an encrypted data set that is the same size as the original, youve'done well. The way I understood it, the only hope of achieving that, was to compress the data (either before or after) encrypting it. Doing so requires the two inverse steps (expansion, decryption) in order to retrieve the data. We employed a 148-bit scheme to encrypt credit-card numbers, and saw a significant expansion.
Good article though.
With the advent of Sarbanes-Oxley, credit-card companies have begun to require that credit-card numbers be encrypted whenever they are stored on a computer.
