Gadgets & Tech – There are some upcoming changes to the Netscape.com site that we hope will improve your experience. Visitors to Netscape.com will see a more traditional news experience very soon. But don't worry, the social news site isn't going away!

It looks like the social networking site will be incrementally phased out. It didn't enhance the Netscape brand.
I don't know whether to be happy or sad.
It all comes down to the bottom line. They are in business, we are here to interact. Those interests clash at some point, and the one with the dollars in his pocket trumps the majority.
"It all comes down to the bottom line. They are in business, we are here to interact. Those interests clash at some point, and the one with the dollars in his pocket trumps the majority."
Running a web site costs money. Somebody has to pay for it, and it is NOT Netscape members under the current business model. It's not undemocratic for an unprofitable business to close its doors to its customers.
You are correct, Steven. Sometimes I forget that, because NS has morphed into a living breathing organism that you fall in love with, similar to a pet. As you see it grow, you put time and effort into making it better, meeting new people, and having spats with others, you become attached (dare I say addicted).
You could understand the backlash, even when tempered by someone allaying your fears, because any company that is planning a massive layoff will deny it up to the last day. You see the writing on the wall and know the outcome.
This whole thing is all the Neocon's fault! It would ALREADY be a normal news site if not for Alpha Gnosis and LuvmySelf and David Halko.
Only because they oppose your point of view? I don't think so.
Gee...I wonder if it's going to retain the so-called "Libscape" feel to it, the one so many cons say it has...
I would suspect NOT. Why do you think the changes are coming? Libscape is a dismal commercial failure. Hell even Huffington was smart enough to dump the I hate America crowd long ago as it had driven down traffic to a couple hundred, just like most other Liberal blogs. It may be successful if you only want a couple hundred of the same Bush basher, I hate the USA, the troops are poor stupid people crowd all day long. But if you are looking for a majority of the potential users Libscape will have to be scraped.
One of the most attractive things about Netscape was the name. It has cache. There are tons of social sites, but when you say "I participate at Netscape" people recognise the name, whether they understand the difference between the social aspect and the browser or not.
And it looks like wow.com may be a reality, AOL has already lined it up:

NS has morphed into a living breathing organism that you fall in love
ricky,
That's only part of the problem. If you notice in the feedback, you'll see that your premise has some merit. I don't find this forum anymore biased than the rest of the nation, but there will forever be those that would bring to the altar their petty grivances.
I believe that the main reason for the change is to generate revenue. Mammon is the God anyone worships without doubt and its commandment is unquestioned.
LM: Most people are mammon worshippers, but not all. -Rev. S
i like netscape
Pretty shallow comment, Ricky! I'm sorry that I wasn't included. = ( LOL Luv's gone for now, but the issues are bound to heat up in the next few months with the campaign burgeoning forth. Are you able to stay in the kitchen, without trying to kill the rest of the cooks? : D -Rev. S
Yeah, it's sad that some people think that this doesn't qualify as a news site because stories they disagree with are on here.
No. You guys just don't know how to be subtle enough about your spin. You need to be more like Bill O'Reilly and trick us into thinking you have half a brain.
Are you really Neophile? And if so, don't you already exert enough influence without the use of puppetry? If not, why do you care who submits stories and what kind of stories get submitted?
That's what I love about the OLD Netscape. Where else would you find a group of presumably intelligent people carrying on a debate with an empty skull.
Ricky, I miss Luvmypres as a foil to your views.
we all miss LuvMyPrez
She was a hate filled Ann Coulter follower.
I miss her too... =(
dudes...luvmydong...is alphagnosis....
gheesh...
"This whole thing is all the Neocon's fault! It would ALREADY be a normal news site if not for Alpha Gnosis and LuvmySelf and David Halko."
Hmmmm .. but what about Dicky Rawkins? That person has been a joke for quite a while
what's wrong Ricky afraid you wont be able to espouse your views any more
I agree with dawkins. Many the post had some nice discussion going and the neocons swoop in not to present an opposite point of view but to stop discussion dead, like all the anti-global warming hate posts.
There are whole ultra-conservative books on how to block legitamite discourse and prevent others from making their point.
Many cons here followed those henious guide lines to the detrimate of Democracy.
If you are looking for a great social interactive news community, check out digg.com and reddit.com -- the communities there are more mature, and frankly, the content is better.
I am not a big fan of Netscape's social news service...it is awkward. For example, logging into the site is a chore. When I click on a link, I don't go to a new page, I get a frame with Netscape's crap on the side.
Bottom line, anything that AOL (which owns Netscape) touches goes to sh*t. I am not surprised that this service went to the dogs.
"digg.com and reddit.com -- the communities there are more mature, and frankly, the content is better."
Excuse me ??????? Mature ???? Give me a break ! All bunch of kids on main page with theres pics/ajax/star wars/what ever posts are more mature for you ??
Did you miss something there lately ?
I cannot say the same thing about the guys who just warmed the chair before you.
digg has no humor channel :(
the humor is provided by the liberal's comments
Brought on by nitwit actions.
Digg is overrun with adolescents with a chip on their shoulder. Definitely not for the netscape crowd.
Best of luck.
Demo site - is one ugly portal. I don't want another my.yahoo.com, with 300 percent adds, spinning banners.
There are plenty sites that lists mainstream stories. This is the reason I canceled newspaper sub. Current Netscape has stories that not so much front news.
browntiger,
Ditto that. MSN has the same thing. Back in the early days of the internet subsciber services AOL was touted as a great ISP (before DSL and only dialup). I chose an ISP that was independent. I used Eudora for mail until I got Hotmail. Now Hotmail is owned by MSN and I can't use any other mail handler that can interact with Hotmail other than Outlook for a yearly fee.
I chose NS because IE was giving a problem with security assignments which NS does with ease. Now that NS is about to change nothing really matters anymore.
You're not the only one SJ! I really don't know how to take this bit of news either.
AOL has tried to gobble up companies that it can't manage. TimeWarner was the most dramatic example of that. Luckily, TimeWarner shook off the tree and got this monkey off their company.
AOL has shown no competence or credibility. Their only success is filling our landfills with millions upon millions of trash CDs.
If they have any smarts left (which I doubt they do) they should leave Netscape alone.
Netscape opened up the brand new world of Internet to us and gave us the power to explore that world full of wonders and surprises. We are far better informed and far more capable of accessing the world because of Netscape. We have now tools that can take our views messages, photos and videos anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds.
Netscape even survived the evil attempts by mean and vicious Micro$oft to "Cut off the oxygen supply".
Netscape is too valuable a brand to be allowed to be trashed by these incompetent bozos from AOL.
Peace and Blessings!
HA! that reminds me when I would get the 3 1/2" floppies in the mail. They expanded my floppy collection by 50% at least! I loved using them as my backup collection. Not any more though... :^(
And they made terrible frisbees too.
At first, I tried using them as coasters, but the cups kept on sliding, so I tried them as frisbees (Yes, I admit to that!), but they just couldn't take the flight (just like the AOL Turkeys!).
So I tossed them in the garbage!
(Sorry, Lord! They made me do it!)
I glued the CD's to the side of my nest, they make good color shows!
EE - You might want to try another site I've heard of, it's called trust serve not sure about the space or whether it's all one word, bit it's sposed to be quite good......
I already belong to trust serve and I like it, I have had connection issues all summer!~!
My bellsouth dial up draggggggggged, my Wild Blue satellite crashed and burned and att tower was way to far from the nest.
Today I got Verizon broadband and it has out performed any thing!!! So now from the nest in the middle of the woods I have a decent connection for once.
Yippee !!!
I have noticed that the "User Generated" news stories were spam many times and that people had submitted MANY items which were not so much news, as much as opinion in news format....I dont like or respect that type of operation.
Great link!
And you can be sure that others saw the same thing, even while the Netscape staff were misleading the users.
The Netscape staff was misleading nobody. We responded to Arrington's post based on the best information we had at the time.
Okay, Mr. Marcus, I used the wrong word. We were not misled, we were lied to. We were lied to by Jason Calacanis on the "social" site's introduction, and we were lied to be each and every one of his successors. Whether the lies were advanced on your own initiative, or because your own employers were not frank with you is immaterial to me. The result was the same--the users of Netscape were consistently fed misinformation. The operators of the site have always seemed more concerned with protecting their own image than with establishing an honest dialogue with the site's users, and the entry by Tom Drapeau, which is linked to this thread, is an ample illustration of the sort of self-justification which has been normal here. Perhaps that attitude has contributed to the social network's lack of success.
I hope that you can forgive my unfortunate choice of words. I will endeavor to more explicit and precise in the future.
I wasn't here when the site was first introduced, and can't speak for Jason Calacanis. But during my tenure, the Netscape staff has not lied to the community, nor have we bent over backwards to protect our "image" (whatever that means).
James,
I concur with you 100%.
Ever since you have come on board, there is an unmistakable presence of professionalism and concern about the social news website's members and participants.
I have, on several occasions, contacted you about some issues and also when I needed help.
I must say in all candor that you have always come through- promptly and courteously! I cannot say the same thing about the guys who just warmed the chair before you.
I feel that separating the traditional Netscape portal from the social news portal is a logical and efficient way to offer each group the best way to reach their destination. It will remove the traffic congestion that has become a major epidemic. If the separation is done in smart, intelligent and caring manner, it will make our experience much more pleasant and rewarding. Maybe a few extra servers would help, too!
I suggest that if you can persuade your anchors/scouts etc. to show more care and compassion, it would be great!
