A study of more than a million spam emails has revealed a weak link in the junk email business. It shows that the web links contained in many spam messages point to just a handful of servers. So, in theory, disabling or blocking these servers could help make spamming a less profitable business.

I'd do just about anything to get rid of spam. It cloggs my inbox like nothing else.

Look, if I want 'male enhancement', a free dinner, a free computer, to watch some sexual act or some other bunch of junk I'll let you know. Otherwise, leave me ALONE.

...or if I want to be scammed from Nigeria, or touted stocks that are "hot" right now today...i'll call my broker! The danger now is that we have so many anti-spam filters and firewalls that all not listed in our e-mail address file are automatically deleted every Am upon opening. What happens if someone I might want to hear from but who is not in my address file wants to send to me, ...it goes out with all the garbage so I become impossible to contact unless I know you well enough to have added your address to my file. Spam should be considred a form of fraud...because it is!

I agree with you. What should happen, is that there should be two levels of e-mail in each e-mail address. You have the 'outer level' that has no access to your inner system (all files are quarentined) and an 'inner level' that only accepts validated mail. That would solve some of it.

One thing we do know is that spammers are a resourceful bunch. Despite efforts from many sources to combat spam, I still get a pile of it in my inbox every day. This type of tactic to undermine the infrastructure of the spammer's network will probably slow it down for a while. But don't ever count out the spammers; they will find a way to adjust. As long as they are making money, they will find a way to spam.

The sad truth is they wouldn't do it if a fair percentage of people didn't respond.

        Are people that stupid?

        That gullible?

.... well there IS a creationist museum, and a nincompoop WAS allowed to be president.... twice.

No I wouldn't count on spammers dwindling any time too soon.

You know, they make SPAM about 30 miles from here, in Fremont, NE.

Wouldn't that be crazy if the servers for spam were in the basement of the SPAM facility? LOL>>

It blows me away that people actually get wrapped up in some of those spam scams. Check out "Ripoff Report" sometime. There are people complaining about being taken by these spam scams all of the time. It's insane that people actually fall for this crap.

Most amusing comments I've read in a long time. Thanks for the lack of acrimony.

I hate to tell you folks, but I seldom get spam. At least with the one e-mail address I use the most. I use it primarily to correspond with friends and relatives and I'm very careful about who gets that e-mail address. I credit that and AOL's seemingly good spam filters and the fact that my screen name is not something that can be randomly generated and I don't go out to the 'net using that e-mail address. I have several e-mail addresses and they all have a different purpose. One is for lists and others are for shopping, surfing and gathering spam which pretty much gets ignored:0)

Nevertheless, I agree that spam needs to be stopped.

Talking about spam, now that we are all here, folks who are regular here, please try to visit these pages more often and report these spam posts, this way we can stay proactive combating it on Netscape (I know it is a different kind of spam) , you can just replace the last "tag" with some other pill or porn related products, but I see the most coming from here, sink and report pls, if they see that we police them frequently they will stop posting it sooner or later .

              http://www.netscape.com/tag/viagra

              http://www.netscape.com/tag/phentermine

              http://www.netscape.com/tag/soma

              http://www.netscape.com/tag/cialis

              Thanks

P.S. Here is a good example, in this case they put "generic" addition to the tags

              http://health.netscape.com/story/2007/03/05/buy...

You can see the on the frontpage when they post, in Netscape Live Tracker .

I certainly encourage users to hit the report spam button as well if they come across spam around here. Trust me, it works! And of course Netscape staff are involved with controlling spam on a day-to-day basis. I visit the tags you listed very often. :)

There is a freeware program called MAILWASHER that will allow you to delete spam before it hits your INBOX. If you don't mind paying a few bucks you can bounce it back to the source.

I probably delete 150 to 200 pieces of spam a day with it.

to stop all this congress ahs to pass one simple law.

a spammer may not block return mail including attachments

if everyone spammed returned the spam with large attachments you could shut down the server.

If spam is unwanted e-mail intending to try to sell me something then no, I don't think it will ever stop. I have had e-mail accounts with both Yahoo and Hotmail. I have received spam from yahoo and msn. I don't read it, I just mark it spam and move on. They don't have enough respect for their own customers to keep from sending them spam. As long as money matters more to people than respect does then it won't stop. If a law is passed, a loop hole will be found. It is the American way. They are not the only "legitimate" businesses send me spam either. So there's the name of two of them. Their web addresses are www.msn.com and www.Yahoo.com. If you want their physical addresses too, I'm sure I can get you that. Now what did you have in mind?

One would think that passing laws that punish those who pay others for spamming would solve the problem to some extent. I mean, people has to spam for a reason. From the article:

"Many links contain extra information to identify that identifies the spam sender, who then receives a commission for the traffic they generate."

If you make that kind of payment illegal then hopefully spam would subside.

In other words, go after the firms being advertised instead of those punks doing the advertising.
