If a person desires to appeal to the masses he will subvert his true convictions for an award, whether election or through money.
I am happy within my own self, radical, freethinker and refusing to lower myself to appeal to the "masses".
If you dislike me fine, if you hate my post, don't read them. My dividing line is treat others as you would want to be treated. Simple, yet elusive with article suggesting you change your rhetoric to appeal to the, "Masses".
No thank you.

Hmmm NelsonR.. power to you for being an individual but the article didn't suggest you change your rhetoric to suit the masses. It doesn't focus on content but all the other stuff, pageviews for site, third-party ranking lists, customer testimonials.
It's not shifting editorial views to suit the masses, its making the actions of the audience more visible on your website.

Standard marketing methods wrapped in Californian psycho-babble.
A good reminder of an important subject but who really needs yet another label for this subject, "Social Proof", a.k.a. herd instinct, mob psychology, fashion, trends, follow-the-leader and on and on?

Is the article saying to post train wreck pictures on your site to attract viewers?
Sounds like they're rediscovering some of the techniques that Madison Avenue advertisers used regularly 40 years ago and then became a forgotten "art."
Very few television ads make you remember the product anymore, and some (like gross food commercials) actually turn me off to their product.
Social proof is an interesting offshoot of sociology but a bikini picture pretty much (sadly) become the standard for the "attractiveness" of a website...
All in all, instead of following some prescribed guidelines I've noticed that sites that are useful and easy (and interesting) get plenty of hits.
