"Blogger's Code of Conduct" Well Intentioned... And Lame-zor »
Posted by: ebrage 1 year, 4 months agoI think it's great and appropriate to discuss better blogging behavior and practical strategies for dealing with the nogoodniks who will show up at every site from to time... but a formalized code of conduct replete with ratification and digital badge is kind of... lame-zor.

Way to go. A dead link. Well, with that said, I have to say that the recent rise in maniacal behavior on some "social networking" sites is disappointing. I have been online in one capacity or another since the early 80's. In truth the internet has come full circle. What started as forums on BBS's, has evolved into "social networking" sites like NS, Digg, et al. Even then we had our share of "nutjobs" spewing venom, and yes death threats to various members and SysOps. The solution? Don't give them power by cowering from them. There will always be someone who vehemently disagrees with any statement an author will post. "There is nothing new under the sun".

There's been a "formal" code for ages.
"DONT FEED THE TROLLS."
All this nonsense about adapting a set of rules that applies to every site in every situation is kinda silly. Jerks are jerks offline or on, and you can't really change that.

Perhaps it would be more useful to make bloggers legally responsible for what appears on their site. For example, if I am maliciously slandered on one blog, and the offending passage is then picked up or linked to by other bloggers, I would want them all to be liable for monetary damages. Bloggers, of course, will not like this idea at all, but I would allow them only one legal defense--the Zenger defense. They would have to PROVE that any allegations they made were true. That would certainly get rid of a lot of the pure crap that is passed along from one site to the next until readers begin to regard it as factual. Make them all pay for their lies.
