Netscape's anti-spam efforts are working »
Posted By msaleem 1 year, 7 months ago in Science & TechnologyHave a look at the graph based on the number of site-mail messages I received before and after the limitation on 'message all friends' was placed, and it becomes abundantly clear that Netscape's efforts are succeeding.

Back when Netscape was still "thinking" about removing the message all friends feature instead of proudly proclaiming the thinking to be yesterday's news, you made it very clear that you did not want to get any PMs notifying you of your friends postings. So perhaps everyone has just stopped messaging YOU. I guess you wanted to stay on people's friend list but not have to bother with actually being friendly?

My message to Mr. Saleem - Part 1.
Mr. Saleem, you and apparently some of your readers are apparently confused as to what "spam" means. If you sign up to receive messages from someone and then they send you messages that is NOT spam. For example you might sign up to receive messages from "MoveOn.org" or from Rush Limbaugh. If you don't like the messages you get then you can always click the "unregister" link usually provided.
Well the same thing is true for Netscape "mutual friends". Under the old system someone could only send mass messages to peole who ACTIVELY AGREED to receive messages from them. If you were getting messages from someone and you didn't want to receive them all you had to do was to remove them from your friends list and then you wouldn't get messages if they did "message all mutual friends". If they persisted then you could always "block" that user.

Part 2:
Now under the new system REAL spam (as opposed to what you are mistakenly calling spam) isn't just possible, it's ENCOURAGED. Netscape still has a feature that allows people to send multiple messages at once. It's the "send this story" feature. With it you can send 5 messages at a time. But unlike the "message mutual friends" system, this one allows you to send messages to people who are NOT mutual friends and who have NOT actively agreed to receive messages from you. Sure you can only send 5 at a time, but with 20 submissions that's 100 messages sent. So gloat all you want, but you are only showing your own ignorance.

I agree 100%. I just don't understand why someone would complain about getting "spam" from someone that they agreed to accept "spam" from, not that I would have called that spam.
As for me, the highlight of my day many times were the links that worker sent me (more for the comments of the posters then the stories), but Alas he now resides up on Netscape's Boothill.

Getting to the front page is still a popularity contest, and why wouldn't it be? It's a "social" news site.
I think your conclusion that receiving fewer messages leads to higher quality posts on the front page is fallacious. There's a disjunction there

With your previous blog posts belittling and demeaning the average netscape user, it's no surprise that you have less site mail. Simply put, you've offended many and now no one likes you.
"This also means that it has become harder for stories to make it to the homepage of Netcape, which implicitly improves the quality of the promoted content on the site."
Being that this self-indulgent drivel still made the front page disproves your conclusion. Your bloc of voters has simply become stronger now that your competition has either been banned or chased away. Enjoy your time in the limelight.

EXCUSE ME FOR BEING BLUNT-You would think that if you dont like it then move on but no- everybody has got to be seen, some of you act like children just submit-discuss or move on if they dont interest you,I dont understand what the big deal is.Some of you act like this is the most important things in your life. And I must say now Im thinking it may be the most important thing you have in your lives.Gee's just go to the ones that interest you and move on,why does everything have to be such a big deal here.

If they take something away I deal with it if its changed then I deal with that too.Netscape has a awesome site,I like it very much and I know some of you have problems with them but in MY OWN OPINION if you wasnt breaking the rules then you wouldnt have any problems.YOU DO HAVE THE CHOICE TO MOVE ON...It doesnt matter to me where my submitted stories are,my friends will check them out anyways rather its the main page or 10 pages back.We are just doing the copy and paste here-its not like they are our own stories-we dont write or make them, why is their always so much anger over who is on the main page.
Enough said.....Oh and Im moving on to the next story not sticking around to try and offend anybody...Ive got things to do...:}:}:} have a good one:}:}:}

Well Stoners I have NOT been "breaking any rules". I liked the "message all mutual friends" feature and I used it to...well MESSAGE ALL MUTUAL FRIENDS! I'm not sure why the term "mutual friends" is so hard for some people to grasp, but mass mailing people who WANT to here from you is NOT spam! Furthermore Netscape claims to have disabled this feature because of "complaints" from people like Mr. Saleem. So, it seems to me that those of us who LIKED the feature have a DUTY to "complain back". Why should whiners like Saleem be the only voices being heard?
I'll add that while Netscape may still be an "awesome site" as you say, it became "less awesome" when it started caving in to people like Saleem.

The mass mailing feature will be missed by some. During the holiday season I got greetings from a number of my friends and I enjoyed it. I also like to hear about stories that they may be interested in. If the story doesn't interest me, I simply delete the message. I'd like the ability to mail en masse returned. Even though I only used it twice, it was nice to know the option was available.
And I'm sinking this story.

I'm glad I read this story. I just returned to Netscape after a long absence and I only had 11 messages. I thought the heavy hitters had deleted me as their friend. A good thing about the change; you really get to know who your friends are. Some the others (maybe) were just trying to make it to the front page. But Amazing1 had a great point about the Holiday greetings and as Sunbeamer stated, I may be missing some good stories because most of my friends had great stories.

Another self-serving post ... this time with a graph! How impressive. Only the mindless could believe factual information can be construed from this simplistic article.
This "report" which is nothing more than hollow self-praise and boastful buffoonery, should have, at least, come from a more unbiased source.
But since the removal of the Mutual PM feature, I have not heard much praise for this change, except from its biggest promoter, msaleem. And, in the style of your manipulativeness, you refrain from dialogue on this thread. Is it open exchange and community that you really want to foster? I think not!
This is my first post since returning from the hospital after emergency surgery. I would have preferred posting a message to my mutual friends list. But, thanks to censors and manipulators like msaleem, that convenience has been taken from us. (By the way, I appreciate all you who have asked about me and who sent your words of support.)

Individual Responsibility ...
Many people, especially freedom lovers, wonder what is the greatest right that people possess. They wonder what is the ultimate right that enables them to enjoy freedom. Many will argue that the right of self-defense is the greatest enabler of freedom. Others will argue for the right of self expression, or some other right. But the greatest enabler of rights and freedom is individual responsibility. Without personal responsibility, rights are meaningless.
msaleem and company do not "feel or believe" the members of the NS commmunity can handle the right of communicating en masse-- that our power must be quelled and restrained due to our corrupt nature of association.
Pretending to be our spam protectors is laughable. The worst thing that can happen to Netscape is to allow this kind of thinking and leadership to continue.

Stoners, you are one nasty, bitter creep. It is plain for all to see that you are trying to brown nose your way into a navigator job. But from the colors you have shown on this thread, you are way too much of a nasty little toad to handle the job. I am copying and saving this thread for just in case netscape admin does decide it can go even lower and hire you. I shall then forward it to any media who have shown an interest in the progress of netscape.
Does anyone know where else stoners posts?
