    I'm sinking this because I don't believe the author is really understanding what Dell's response says and how Linux really is a great desktop operating system.

    For one, the response doesn't convey to "Thanks but no thanks". It simply says there are some issues that need to be worked out with the idea, but it is a possibility they will keep in mind.

    Second, Linux does work just fine as a desktop operating system. The reason it doesn't seem to "just work" when you install it yourself is because you're installing the operating system, drivers, and all the basic software. This is what Dell would be doing FOR the customers who buy open source computers from them.

    As for support, yes, it would be an issue, I agree with that. Though, you can't forget the millions of Linux users willing to lend a helping hand (or be hired as tech-support for that matter).

      They will have had a lot of pressure (or the usual 'scare tactics') used to reverse this decsion. Been there, done that. Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it, sadly.
