Use The Netscape.com Site-Mail, Don't Abuse It »
Posted by: titlesaysitall 1 year, 7 months ago"When Netscape added the site-mail feature I was the first to say that it was a brilliant idea. An on-site way to contact other members, talk to them, and truly be social, and all without having to divulge instant messaging contact information. A few months since, my opinion on the feature has sadly changed."

For me, if someone messages me individually with a story that they know I will find especially interesting, then I'll check it out. However, it's a fairly large turnoff when it gets to be everyday, and even several times a day. Remember, if someone keeps sending you messages and links you don't want to get, you can tell them. If they continue to message you, tell an anchor.
Personally, it's a lot nicer for me to get a sitemail message that actually *says* something instead of someone just trying to promote a bunch of stories I'm not interested in.

I agree with what Corey said, it really gets old when a user feels he needs to messsage you with every activity they do on the site. I have built up an immunity to looking at certain members messages since they send so many that if they really had an important article I would not even know since they abuse the site mail so much.

i want a 'delete all' option or other way to mass delete, if i leave my site mail for a couple of days it gets way out of hand

I agree. I've asked some people to stop messaging me their links of the day. I check out all my friends' submitted stories anyways, so I'll see the article. As Cory said, if it's something I'll specifically enjoy, fine. But I have a tendancy to not want to vote for those pieces that are sent to me simply to get more votes, especially if it's a so-so story.

I think I spend more time deleting my mail then reading it.
Just use the friends sidebar to checkout friends stories.

I can only amen the above comments. I mean If you're not on my friend list but, you've noticed my tendencies I guess that would be different. I felt that the message function was to carry on conversation about a topic without jamming up the board. Example, one topic was sub-commented on so much that I was reading vertically, and it was an exchange between only two persons.
What I would like to see, is that instead of pages and pages of stories no longer commented on, the editors could deem them dead and give us the ability to cull our backlog.

Well, I have to say, I'm guilty. I do send out messages to my mutual friends about the stories that I submit. Always with the caveat that they let me know if they don't want them. However, I have only submitted a total of 17 stories, over a period of about a month and a half. So, I don't think that's a big deal.
But, I will be more careful about it in the future, after reading this submission.

Imagine just how many 'Site Messages' we would get per day if all the users used this function to promote their stories. I find the Friends Activity Tracker(Firefox extension) a very useful tool in helping me keep up with my friends submissions.

Jason has been gone for months, Hobe.
CK is leaving in a week.
Get over it.
And, while you're getting over it, take a course in composition.
*What* is another example of the Garbage Jason Calacanis and CK (Jason Jr') created...?
Garbage is a noun, capitalized in some languages but not English. In English we do not capitalize our nouns.
It is 'Where *are* Fabaian and Karina?'
It is 'What *are* your respective opinions with this issue?'
"Netscape User's" indicates possession, the users do not possess any "would like to know".
While I'm at it "Netscape User's would like to know" is a *statement* not a question so question marks are not required, in fact, they are incorrect and useless.
"What a disgrace" is also not a question so again no question marks are needed.
In any case, there is no such thing as the 'multi-question mark question' which would indicate that you are *really* asking a question as opposed to simply asking a question.

I usually agree that the comment string is no place to correct someone's grammar / sentence structure / spelling but in this case I must make an acception.
Your every post, your every *sentence* is riddled with grammatacal and linguistic inconsistencies. Reading what you write is a chore akin to tranlating heiroglyphic text. Please, I beg you Hobe, if you must spam out your hatred for the powers do it...
Oh, why am I even bothering, you never respond to anything.

If you do away with having to vote to get your story on the front page this will be a thing of the past. Why don't you have 5-10 most posted to threads up, when you post it moves to the top. Even older threads can be brought back to the fore if someone thinks it's of interest. If people aren't interested they won't post and it will fade into the distance. This solves those emailing with hat in hand begging for a vote, it shuts down Cabals that vote for or sink in unison.
Get rid of the popular vote and go with a more logical solution. This advice is free of charge but donations would be appreciated.

Those are great suggestions slate--I like to bring back an older story from time to time. Don't forget the sidebar! That's where I read most of the stories from. I delete most spams from my PM unless they are from some one I PM with--so I'm more likely to see submissions in the sidebar.

ind06...
Thank you for the response, it is interesting and somewhat amusing...
You would be very proud me if you were read some of my publications...
There are many styles of writing which do not emphasize the use of perfect English Grammar.
This concept is known as skill writing..
The purpose is to present the meaning without being wordy. When one Rambles, there is a direct correlation between Time and Interest, as a result, the writers efforts are lost.
"If I had more time, I would have written You more briefly"
Now then, lets try this out. reread my comments and your three responses.
Hopefully you can understand the difference.
There are many styles of writing...
Sincerely,

Hobe,
I would be proud if I read anything by you that I could understand on the first go round. If you think stuffing your writing as full of grammatical errors as possible makes it easier to understand, more power to you. So, I think you were saying:
((This is another example of the Garbage Jason Calacanis and CK (Jason Jr') created...))
Jason Calicanis and C.K. have destroyed Netscape, allowing useless articles like this one to fill the site.
((Where is Fabaian and Karina???))
Why aren't anchors Fabaian and Karina fixing things?
((Netscape User's would like to know????))
The users are unhappy with the situation as it stands.
((What a disgrace???))
It's disgraceful.
There, only 54 more characters than your skill writing and easier to understand without the need to turn every statement into a question, capitalize words that don't require capitalization or triplicate every question mark.

Well, like any venue, junk mail was bound to happen on the site mail...
I still try to look at all the messages sent to me, in the hope that my own missives won't be ignored.

I do like to be informed of the stories that my friends are posting. Most of the people I talk to have something to say, so it is enjoyable to read their posts and stories. I like staying informed.

I don't think it's as big an issue as the blogger in the article said. People e-mailing with articles saves me the time of rooting thru the site to find articles to read. I'm like; hey thanks man.
The only thing I hate about the mail is I get a message when someone makes me their friend. That gets old after a while.

WOW
I'm uneducated, have a fairly low IQ (7) , my grasp of the English language is iffy at best. My written skills were wiped out by the time I huffed my 25th bag of glue when I was 12 or so.
I have a plaque above my desk that says King of Typo!
All in all I think most people can get their views across without having to write like a English Literature Post graduate.
A doctorate from the Jethro Bodine Skool of cypherin and a large dose of common sense, coupled with a dash of self deprecating humor works well enough.

Slate, I'm not sure you rate as King of the Typo since in my "Grammar Is God" posting I had three typos and in your "Typos Aren't So Bad" posting you had none.
At the very least I think crummy spelling in a corrective post qualifies me for some sort of "Duke Of Irony" plaque. Or perhaps an "A-Hole of the Day" Award for getting STONERS to 'bad' three of my comments in a row. I feel thoroughly chastised.

The only time you won't see typos in one of my posts is when I get too excited to write in WORD prior to posting.
