Gadgets & Tech – Ryan will be your host this Thursday, but some of Netscape's other Anchors and Navigators will probably be stopping by as well. So bring your voice, opinions and excitement, and meet Ryan in the chatroom at 7pm EST on Thursday where we'll talk about this week's top stories together. Then join Ryan back here next Thursday where we will continue the new open chat as a regular weekly feature. See you on Thursday!
Dakota:
Dakota: OK, Ryan, it's one of Netscape's first officially sanctioned chats. What are you going to be talking about?
Ryan: Well, Ms. Smith, since this is the first organized chat, I really want to just go in and kind of feel what everyone else wants to do with it. Netscape is all about the people so we need to follow their lead. That said, there does need to be "some" structure, so I'd like to hit some of the big stories of the week as well: James Kim, the Mars discovery, and I'd also really like to highlight some of the better anchor commentaries that we've done throughout the week.
Dakota: Thank you for calling me "Ms". That clears up readers’ questions about whether I am a male or female.
Ryan: Ha!
Dakota: So, is there anything that'll be off-limits in tonight's chat?
Ryan: For me personally, no, but that changes from person to person. I'll answer pretty much any question out there. I won't allow cursing or insults to and from users. Everything outlined in our Terms of Use is still applicable in the chat room, so while we're all for open discussion, debate and even arguing, there's no reason to be petty and start name-calling. Story/News-wise, if the users want to talk about it, then we have to talk about it. The main focus of Netscape is finding out what everyone thinks is newsworthy, so if a majority of the people would rather talk about TomKat's wedding as opposed to possible life on Mars, then (as much as it would pain me), that's what we'll talk about.
Dakota: Are there any Netscape members you are hoping will stop by and stir things up?
Ryan: Ha! I hope we get a good cross-section of opinions in there. I'd love to see some of our more outspoken users such as Mamasan, Scott-O-Rama and Masked Protester get in there so that their voices can be heard by other users who may not read the articles that they submit or read. Also, and I'm sure they will, but I'm hoping as many of our Navigators stop by as possible.
Dakota: And what’ll be different about our chat than chats at other web sites? What's the secret Netscape sauce, Ryan?
Ryan: Me, of course! No, seriously, our chats will be, like the site itself, driven by what's important to the users. But as Anchors, we’ll keep the conversations on topic, relevant, and civil. And we're talking about doing "special event" chats, which will be a lot of fun. Who knows, maybe we'll even have some special guests stop by to chat and talk with the users.
Dakota: OK, thanks Ryan. Good luck tonight! Don't let anyone trash talk you!
Ryan: Pfft, never. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Survivor comes on at 8pm EST. I'm a big fan of all Thursday night TV too, that's why I planned on having it for an hour or so leading up to "primetime". I also wanted to do it on Thursday so that we could wrap up the week's news, but was afraid we wouldn't get the same crowd on a Friday night.
This is definitely one of the things we'll be talking about in the chat though.

anytime I go to chat no one is ever there.
yeah, its a ghost town most nights. I tend to round up people if i see them online and I have nothing better to do.
Friday nights around midnight seem to work for most people, I've found.
Don't forget the cheap libations...tongues get loose...and funny ;)
That is practically a requirement, Pinky. As you and I know all too well. ;)
....lol...very good...lol
That's why we're implementing a scheduled chat every Thursday night at 7pm EST. Hopefully, we can build up a time where everyone can get together and discuss things; long term, I could see us having regularly scheduled nightly chats on various topics. Like Tuesday night at the movies with Karina, or something like that.
