Microsoft to Promote Linux: The Details »
Posted by: TheAttacks 1 year, 10 months agoThe deal announced Thursday between Microsoft and Novell essentially sets aside their decades-long disputes over who owns IP rights to each other's operating system - Microsoft to concepts that were co-opted by SUSE Linux (including, possibly, the file system); Novell to networking concepts in Windows that date back to NetWare.

Attacks, good catch.
Fabienne, enjoyed your commentary more than the artcle.
My brain still does NOT trust Microsoft.
Cheers to all.

Nov. 3, 2006, 11:38 a.m.Still plenty of choice in the Linux market if you don't want to deal with a company that is in bed with Microsoft.
schestowitz - as a recovering KDE user I can only in good conscience recommend regular gnome based Ubuntu. KDE, always ugly, is getting uglier. You can still install the base KDE stuff to run KDE based apps if you need to.

Nov. 3, 2006, 1:53 p.m.Add another 1 for the Gnome-based Ubuntu, and if you want an even faster Ubuntu experience, the XBuntu fork is really clean and stable.

TheAttacks
Nov. 3, 2006, 4:45 p.m.I agree that KDE is ugly, but that's all opinion as there are many things you can do to your theme in KDE that just aren't possible in Gnome. But in my experience (with Ubuntu-based distributions in particular), the original Gnome Ubuntu is the most stable.
Wil, Xubuntu runs XFCE, which is the down-right, bare-minimum windows manager. That's essentially why it runs a lot cleaner and more stable, but many users don't like the lack of eye-candy and GUI interface that Gnome/KDE provide.

Nov. 3, 2006, 1:27 p.m.This could be really, really bad for Linux and the Free (as in beer and speech) Software movement.
Technocrat has a good rundown of the reasons: http://technocrat.net/d/2006/11/2/9945

Nov. 3, 2006, 1:28 p.m.Well said, Fabienne.
Derek, I'm not sure about the third E... Novell could be punished (again!), but the code lives on in ~450 distros.
