Netscape recently launched a syndicated video service, very similar to YouTube. Having integrated the best features of Digg and MySpace into Netscape.com, can they now take on YouTube?

Great article. I think that it is possible for Netscape to take on YouTube, but I don't think they will make a big dent in the video sharing industry quite yet. Things are still being sorted out with their "Digg-likeness" and the user base I feel is still a little shaky. Many of the people who do visit Netscape probably have for many years now and are still uncomfortable with the new setup. Digg converts however, feel at home (like myself).

Once Netscape gets past that transition hump, however then they will be able to succeed at the next venture. Until then, it probably wont be THAT big of a hit with the videos. It's a great feature, and it has great capabilities... but it is very possible that it is too soon for it. But who knows? I could be very wrong.

I agree with CameronKollwitz, great article, but how do we get youtubers to convert?

It's all about building that perfect niche. Once the new Netscape gets settled in and has a steady flow of members and contributors; everything will fall in to place. I mean, us dedicated Netscape users will surely convert from YouTube to Netscape easily. But because of the small user base (compared to YouTube) it will be hard to get the word out there without doing something drastic.

We don't have to take on, or beat, YouTube to win... winning for us is doubling our traffic over the next year. We do that we're a huge win for AOL/TW... Netscape has been on a three-year slide down. Since we made the change the first two months were flat, and now we're starting to go up again.

That being said... I think our video tools are certainly better on a technical level, so Cameron is right that we have to keep working on slowly building a solid community.

You can see the community growing here with the political stories on the home page getting 200-1,000 comments each from hundreds of people. So, I think we're well on our way... also, we're signing up 1,000 new accounts every day. I think that will put us at a faster growth rate than digg had at the *start*

I don't think at this stage in the game YouTube and Netscape Video have the same end game. A large majority of YouTube is copyright infringement as well, and that really wouldn't fly here.

Cuban has warned about the prospects of YouTube. And a company that went out of business recently (auctioned on eBay) clearly stated that traffic does not equate to profits, so...

Let's wait and see, shall we? *smile*

All of my other players--Quicktime, Windows Media, Real Player, and even YouTube play, on my machine, much better than the Netscape player. My Netscapeplayer is jerky and chopped up sound quality.

I remember back in the good ole days when Netscape was inovative and not trying to keep up with the Joneses. My how times have changed. Forget Youtube take a chance and step away from the pack and do your own thing. Microsoft will gobble up Youtube soon enough.

Jason Coery: Agreed youtube has swallowed itself.

Suggestion: Migrate the blog feature to contributors and migrate the anchors/navigators to a forum. make NS = SN. User generated content in the blogs will equal NS exclusive content and keep the eyeballs in NS. A blog will also encourage continued returns from contributors. Allow clients to select 3 catagories to classify the blog (political, news and technology) on the user profile put a forum link and NS blog link. On the front page add "recently updated blog" and most viewed blog by catagory.

Great job so far and I really enjoy alot of the new features.

Add a couple of slick & fun features. With the right design, it is possible to grab the market - remember how iPod took over the music player industry?

NS has neither the clout or capital to focus on youtube. It must contend with the "next round", Like wallop from microsoft. so wasting resources on a user viewed been there and done that fun for awhile thing is useless. look forward and see the real next big thing

It might be perfectly fine to emulate other sites but I have two thoughts:

                          1. Any "video sharing" site is only as good as its content. It's like when people ask me if I like to read. I respond with "I like to read stuff that I like to read." I don't just read for the sake of it. That's why I don't understand "being into YouTube."

                          2. Looking forward to Netscape coming up with a technology that others will want to copy. Set the trends, people!

youtube has a problem with the timing, on the videos when i upload a AVI. format the video goes first than the voice or sound, and so on, youtube has, a very fast uploading tool, but normally you have to edit the videos to make them 100 mb, i like more than 100 MB, for micros and video makers pro, and the chance of putting music, text or different layout made by myself, maybe a free program to edit your videos in 3 steps, and be able to upload music o other features in your videos, a very interesting point NETSCAPE gives a chance to broadcast live via msn etc..., connecting to netscape server and be able to be seen from your home to anyone who's on my channel, on netscape.. by example GATTO GABRIEL LIVE ON VIDEO "click here" Good luck...

I think it's not the exact same thing. But as Jason said, on a technical level, Netscape Video is better.

I wouldn't use any of them for my own videos though, that's what blip.tv is for, but Netscape has made a bold move and I think they're on the right track.

The new Netscape is a disgrace, Jason CALACANIS did a very poor job in the Planning, Development, and Implementation of the new NETSCAPE. He dosen't seem to have any IT experience?

He Failed to include FAIR and BALANCED REOPRTING...

Jason would be better off at CNN or CBS as a GM, there they present one point of view There own, and you have no choice but to agree or ignor it. That's way they have so poor ratings, and are loosing support daily.

Go Jason CALACANIS, You are a disgrace to force this new netscape on Users? Do you understand what Fair and Balance means? Are you getting monetery support from Ggeorge Soros?

Please respond, Netscape Users would like to hear from You!

                                    Sincerely,
