Sept. 5, 2006, 1:42 p.m.Oh wow. I don't know what to think. There have been so many conflicting reports about YouTube lately. From being worth about $1bn, to spending $1mn/day on bandwidth, and no business plan for profitability, I just don't know.

Sept. 5, 2006, 2:03 p.m."It's something that should be easy, given that the company gets more than 100 million video views per day and has a market share in excess of 40%, beating out online veterans as well as traditional media companies."
It is not going to be easy at all.
1. Advertisers do not want to be in front of unqualified video (i.e. user generated or stolen video).
2. Once they start selling advertising against stolen video they are going to have lots of legal issues. The big reason they haven't been rocked with lawsuits is that they don't have ads.
This is going to be theglobe.com all over again... it's a total scam. If you gave away free cable tv you would have a huge audience, but at some point--the point at which you started making money--the cable companies would come and ring your bell. That is what's about to happen.
If YouTube was a real business someone would have bought them by now. The M&A market will never be hotter, but all the big buyers know they will get hit with lawsuits.

Sept. 5, 2006, 6:28 p.m.YouTube reaches audiences some businesses can not because of Super Fans. Super Fans primarily use the Internet to share their "likes and/or dislikes" about actors/actresses, studios, movies, film plots and whether other fans should watch the movie at the expensive theater, wait for DVD or cable, and/or at all. Super Fans also influence and/or persuade other fans to see, reject, and/or ignore movies and films that do not meet their expectations. Super Fans are extremely wise with their economic dollar yet generous towards things that they like. If you can win the Super Fan over you may have a lifetime fan and free publicity. Super Fans exist all around us and in various occupations. They can do a lot of damage when attacked. 2006 100,000 Super Fans attended Comic Con in San Diego. Also, Super Fans attending the Fangoria Horror Conventions before the end of the year will reach just as high of attendees or more. Super Fans do not want stolen anything or pirated items.

Sept. 6, 2006, 2:43 a.m.I think YouTube should implement a system of individual user sponsorship or atleast a method for the copyright holders to earn royalties from ad revenue. They can offer copyright holders a legal way "buying" viewing rights on certain videos, and a method for tracking and revenue sharing.
Just a thought though. :-)
