Aug. 13, 2006, 4:48 p.m.Also, I think there's some good advice in there - especially about the bookmarklet. I think it would be better to have it bring up a popup instead of changing the page you are already viewing and want to submit. Thoughts?

Aug. 13, 2006, 4:50 p.m.Since I submitted this story, I figured I would post comments in rebuttal of some of the points brought up.
Quote:"Netscape is attempting to take the best parts of digg and Newsvine." Yes, Netscape is trying to add their own features to the website. It had been made clear from the beginning that while Netscape is a social bookmarking website - they are not strictly following in the mold of others.
"Netscape has too many channels. There are 30 of them in all. This lack of focus shows that they are trying to be all things to all people.Netscape has too many channels. There are 30 of them in all." Netscape is a news resource. Visit any other "top down" news website (CNN, MSNBC, etc...) and you will find a similar number of channels. Why would you not want to include a spectrum of channels to attract readers of all kinds? cont...

Aug. 13, 2006, 4:57 p.m."Story submission is a huge pain in the ass on Netscape" I'm not familiar with Newsvine's story submission process, but I find Netscape's submission process to be better than digg's. The duplicate searcher is very good, and the story tags are helpful.
"The tagging options are extremely limited." Perhaps limiting the tags is a way to keep a story from being tagged with every single popular tag on the website in hopes to be viewed by more people searching tags. I find 5 tags is sufficient to describe my story.
"And last, there is no way to write your own column." Alas, for people who are into the Newsvine way, I agree that this would be a nice addition to the website. Perhaps if enough people suggest it, the Netscape will add it as a feature.

Aug. 13, 2006, 8:56 p.m.del.icio.us uses a popup with their Firefox extension. I don't have problems submitting stories to Netscape with the bookmarklet.
I get the impression that the author has not spent enough time on Netscape as the channels do make it easier to navigate around. I often find the main page a little boring as it's often dominated by politics and the damn wars.
Tags are tags, more habit than anything else. Somedays I tag well and somedays I don't tag very well. I would like a tag cloud page that is not on a 24 hour clock. Or maybe 72/48 hour tag cloud pages. There are times I feel like I'm racing the tag clock with my photography story submissions. A bit annoying that.

Aug. 13, 2006, 9:33 p.m.Admittedly I have not spent a great deal of time here on Netscape. But, I believe I have spent enough time for my own personal evaluation. I guess as we all live in different places, wear differnt clothes, and drive different cars that we all won't have the same taste in social news sites.
Newsvine seems to fit my needs better than both digg and Netscape.

Aug. 13, 2006, 10:32 p.m.I respect your opinion kevinb66. Everyone has an opinion as to which model of social bookmarking or which website format they prefer. You obviously prefer the way that Newsvine is bringing news to the world. I can't blame you for that and I'm not trying to change your opinion with my post. I'm an experienced social bookmarker myself. I see the merit in some of your opinions and believe that Netscape should try to make some improvements to rectify. Obviously from my above posts, I don't agree with everything you said, but this is the type of submission that I would rather see on the front page where people can discuss it. Everyone has an opinion as to why or why not a website works for them. I encourage discussions on this subject so that developers / admins may be able to understand what type of things that the public is really looking for in the website and they may be able to discuss and act on those items. Call it constructive criticism if you will.

Aug. 13, 2006, 11:25 p.m.Newsvine, Digg, and Netscape will all appeal to different audiences. I use all three, but I'm having the most fun on Netscape.

Aug. 14, 2006, 10:56 a.m.I like it. I find it interesting that the same people who complain over and over about the new format, are the ones taking full advantage of the format, and quite freely expressing their views. I'm all for dialogue. Never having used Digg or Newsvine, this is new to me, but I see no glaring problems with Netscape's version.
