Aug. 8, 2006, 10:52 a.m.I disagree with the fundamental argument. Not everyone wants to vote, a lot of people do, but I'd be shocked if over time(its obviously not true today) it even turns into a majority of people. What people do like is customised information, and thats probably why My Yahoo and the google home page are so popular.
If you find a community that works for you, a bookmarking site lik del.icio.us or voting site like digg or netscape might work for a few people, but I doubt it would work for a majority of people on the web.

Aug. 8, 2006, 11:24 a.m.I disagree also, when I go to a search engine I am looking for something specific, when I come here or a digg type site, its to browse whats hot and happening now.

Aug. 8, 2006, 4:37 p.m.I think google co-op (www.google.com/coop) is already a pretty good integration of social features into search results. Specialized results for co-op will appear above regular search listings if they apply to what you searched for. There is even a digg subscription for co-op.

Aug. 8, 2006, 4:44 p.m.Drdash and amit, it is not that I am saying they'll beat the search engines now! I am talking about a thing which may happen in future...It may take time though. Another thing which I would like to mention is that I feel the concept of Netscape and Digg is not to provide hot and happening news only.....you can ask kevin rose and jason about it and they will agree to it. The main idea was to provide a place where a user could find the stories or articles (not just latest news) and then give his/her opinion about the story, this will help a user to reach to the people with similar interests and share the thoughts and information with them.

Aug. 9, 2006, 1:15 a.m.I like this Netscape site for News and World Events, and it's interesting to read the neat/stupid opinions others have on all the stories.
But when it comes down to hardcore knowledge, I always prefer a traditional search engine like Google, or even Wikipedia.
There's a place for both actually.
