Posted by: msaleem 2 years, 2 months agoA German man using Google Earth to study faraway places says he has stumbled upon a site on a Chinese military base that had been secret for decades. Identified only by his computer name, "KenGrok," the man zoomed in until he saw what was a miniature replica of China's disputed border region with India, ABC News reported.

Aug. 3, 2006, 10:05 p.m.You would think China would make Google 'fuzz out' its military installations. I wonder if China blocks the software?
Unrelated, but I saw that MSNBC and the Daily Show both use the software on the air. You can even see the Google Earth logo in the corner.

Aug. 4, 2006, 2:46 a.m.it would have been nice to see a picture of what they saw, or am I just missing it somewhere? but on the other side of it... china has never been one to just lay down and forget .... they have always said they will get back what they belive is theirs ..... at any cost.

Aug. 4, 2006, 7:23 a.m.CNN uses it too, and the recent 9/11 documentary Loose Change 2e. Since I downloaded the free version, I´ve found everywhere I used to live (I´m a navy brat, so it was quite a feat!) You can even check surf spots to visit and see if it breaks left or right (this is important for me since I´m really far from any good waves.) I´m curious to know how often it gets updated, so far I have noticed any changes in a week. As for the China base, this is no big deal. Remember those rumors inthe eighties about satellites being ableto read a newspaper from space? It´s true, the military is all over this stuff. I can assure you that the gentleman from Germany didn´t see anything the Joint Chiefs of Staff aren´t already aware of. I´m one of those people who is very concerned about the government prying into our private lives but I think Google Earth helps level the playingfield a little bit for the av. Joe. IMHO Google Earth is the best thing since the internet.

Aug. 4, 2006, 10:08 a.m.In DC, and some parts of Rome and London, you can see people walking around using the free version. It would be cool if Google ever gets access to military images.

Aug. 4, 2006, 10:19 a.m.Clearly is meant to represent terrain as seen from altitude.
This would imply some type of pilot training facility for manned or, most probable, unmanned military based operations.
Or this is an interesting hoax. Whatever

Aug. 4, 2006, 10:49 a.m.The title states its a military comlplex but the article states no one knows what it is..
I personally fear the Chinese more than all the terrorist organizations in the world put together. I dont trust them and history shows we shouldnt. Soon theyll make there intentions known along with there buddies Russia, Belarus, Iran, North Korea, Venzuala and France. They all have alterior motives and do a lot of shady stuff. Sorry to sound like a conspiricy theorist but it just seems like things might be heading that way

Aug. 4, 2006, 10:58 a.m.PINTO - its easy to make careless, flimsy statements. Please provide real proof. Better yet, name all the countries that China has invaded.

Aug. 4, 2006, 12:33 p.m.Countries China invaded recently:
India
Vietnam
Tibet
And are preparing to invade:
Taiwan
Saneman - look at strategic moves China is making securing energy supplies from Venezuela and Russia. It is buying high tech weapons from Russia in massive quantities part of a broader military buildup. It is also a major exporter of ballistic missle tech to N. Korea, Pakistan, and Iran. They also supply conventional arms (tanks, fighter planes, etc.) to those countries and many more.
And don't get me started on technology theft, currency manipulation, and their human rights record.
PINTO is correct. It's a good idea to keep a close eye on China's direction right now.

Aug. 4, 2006, 12:53 p.m.The BRIC - Brazil, Russia, India, China. Perhaps amended to BRICV to include Venezuela. This a loose alliance of countries with shared foreign policy and economic goals.
Things in common:
Large, populous countries with developing economies
Historically not aligned with "western" interests
Popular hostility against the US
Mutual economic interests
Mutual "security" interests
China and India are export & technology driven, Brazil Venezuela and Russia are energy/natural resource rich (mainly think oil). Russia and China are the arms producers.
Keep an eye on business deals and arms sales within the group. Russia sells high tech arms to China, India and Venezuela. Russia and Venezuela are the energy suppliers to the growing economies of India and China. Brazil will be an emerging energy supplier, but is sort of the weakest partner in the group.
Google it - BRIC - I'm not making this up. It's an emerging strategic alliance.

Aug. 4, 2006, 1:31 p.m.rrrtx - Taiwan and Tibet have always been part of China. They are countries that wanted to secede from China, not any different when the South tried to do that during the Civil War even though I wish Texas would have seceded somehow. China did not invade India nor Vietman. Get your facts and history straight. I know an awlful lot about China since I work directly with my manufacturer in China every single day.

Aug. 4, 2006, 2:07 p.m.saneman,
Please sir, get your facts straight before accusing others. Texas was it´s own republic (that´s why it´s called `The Lone Star State´ and joined the union voluntarily, then did secede with the rest of the southern states. Tibet was a sovereign nation without a military when it was forcefully invaded. Taiwan had been under Japanese occupation for more than a decade before the nationalists retreated there after WWII.
It was also under de-facto control of pirates (i.e. the emperors´orders were not complied with) for many years throughout the second millenium.
Let´s just stick to the Google piece for now. It´s inevitable that people who have never served in the military will call for wars, that´s just what ignorant people do. Last little note: if you are not/did not wear the uniform, please don´t call for even more war.

Aug. 4, 2006, 2:30 p.m.Tristansdad - Maybe you should read what I said. I said I want Texas to secede NOW. Also, China has always claimed control over both Tibet and Tawain.

Aug. 4, 2006, 3:08 p.m.David my man - I didn't know that Iraq attacked the U.S. during the Persian Gulf War.
Also, please provide me names of the Sunnis who attacked the U.S. on 9/11. I always thought they were all shiites, and we all know how well Sunnis and Shiites love each other.

Aug. 4, 2006, 3:18 p.m.Tristansdad - I have read through all the posts and couldn't find anybody calling for war. If you are referring to me, maybe you should understand what sarcasm is.

Aug. 4, 2006, 3:20 p.m.Everybody loves a secret, especially when the media gets involved and the players all start feeling like James Bond. I bet Ken, code name Ken, made a few quiet calls about his find before exposing the Chinese for their little secret.
Just a little hint, if the Chinese military was involved, there were many eyes watching the construction. Second hint, it was only a secret to Joe public.
