While Skype offered free service to landlines for a year, Gizmo offers it forever. However, until Gizmo and Skype are interoperable, its like a format war.

Not totally true. You can't just make a VoIP call to just any landline (like you can in Skype, albeit for only until the end of the year).
The person you're calling has to have that landline registered with their own Gizmo account. So it's probably only good with family and friends that are willing to download the software and register.
Oh, China and the Philippines are NOT on the list of countries that you can call for free either. Bummer...
