Netscape will discontinue their web mail service effective August 19th [update: today August 25th]. Users will be transferred to AIM mail. Users' e-mail addresses will remain @netscape.net, but will no longer use the Netscape Mail service. The transition will increase inbox sizes from 250 MB to 2 GB, along with several other upgrades.

I use AIM as my so called secondary e-mail address. Its much better than the old netscape.net service. You can also get free a AIM PHONELINE (a phone number)for inbound calls that you can either pick-up or let it go into your inbox if you are online. I think the plan that lets you make outbound calls starts at $9.95.

note: you must download the AIM software to be able to get a AIMPHONELINE.

Rats. There goes the only reason I've continued to use Netscape webmail... unless the fundamental problem with using the Netscape browser (or Mozilla) has been fixed.

If it hasn't, then "Good-bye, Netscape."

Can ANYBODY please explain why the recent Netscape webmail CANNOT open an e-mail item in the current browser window instead of opening a new window? If it would just open in the same window, it would be possible to click a link in an e-mail and select .

One of the MAJOR features of the Netscape browser is totally disabled for e-mail by this move.

What a waste. Don't you guys have any idea how your own products work?

Sigh, this won't even let me type in a comment correctly. My previous comment should have said "...and select [Open link in new tab]." But it dropped the bracketed clause.

That is a nice e-mail FAQ from AOL. I knew you could configure for IMAP but I'd lost track of the instructions.

          Useful that.

I hope the Netscape-to-AIM-Mail transfer doesn't affect my Webmail's folders (where I have lots and lots of messages saved, originally moved from the inbox).

They say that your email address is yours for life. A couple of years ago, they took my email address away and gave it to someone else. Aside from that, I've no complaints (but that was pretty annoying - I hope that my personal information / passwords never got emailed to the person who was given my old identity!)

Somehow, I found Netscape Mail (WebMail) was better than AIM Mail. Easier to access, and the webpage displays faster.

Everyone should have known this was coming when the Netscape home page was turned over to juvenile users.

I suspect that AOL had already made the decision to abandon Netscape (as a redundant portal), and have simply allowed Jason, Karina, and the Our Gang comedy kids to play with it for a while. If they can increase usage and revenue, fine. If not, well, we were going to close it anyway.

The mail service is too large and too intrenched to be simply abandoned, but it must be moved to AOL so that users can continue to access it when Netscape no longer exists.

Do I need a AOL Account to have AIM mail ?

AIM Mail is free, and it is using the same "backend" as the old netscape mail howeveer the AIM Mail has had many more features for some time. I use it as a secondary address as well (and 3rd and 4th hehe) and it works very well and is very smooth, compared to the old netscape mail or any other free webmail (even Gmail) app I have used!

Yeah, until Google itself becomes outdated.

"Do I need a AOL Account to have AIM mail?"

If you have a Netscape webmail address it will stay the same but you will just access it the same way as AIM mail users do. And, no, you won't need to be a subscriber to AOL's monthly internet service to use it.

Everyone listen: just buy a Mac, and get an account with them going. Ten years from now you will be glad you got more familiar with the OS X because the boys and girls at Cupertino are going to change the personal computer industry.

I can not say more but to say Steve Jobs and his crew, within the next five, ten years are going to do to the personal computer that will change world.

One clue, and that's all I'll say. Think: Cyborg type model T-100's is the goal. Really. And this generation is going to start the ball rolling.

                              That's it; I gotta go ...

We lost our homepage, now there goes the E-mail too Wonder how many users are going to have to turn to a technitian or a Computer Guru or a relative or someone else to straighten out this new blunder. I guess us "oldies" better go knit or sit in the rocking chair. The new generations are driving the automobile. Well it appears we have no choice "Again", so I just hope this goes smoother than the last transition.

headline is misleading.. it's not discontinued, it's being upgraded.

we're moving folks from 250 meg to 2GIG and the much better AIM mail platform.

Yes Jason, that is noted in the summary, but my transferring services to AIM Mail, and not allowing anybody to sign up for Netscape.net mail anymore, you are, in effect, discontinuing the service. I'm not saying that it isn't an upgrade -- it clearly is, lots more storage, and an all around better service -- but I'm not going to sugar code it. Netscape mail is being discontinued.
