Gadgets & Tech – Are you a long-time Netscape user like myself who doesn't agree with the format change to Netscape.com? If so, then I invite you to join me as a member of the Netscape community in requesting the return of our Netscape.com by signing the online petition linked above.
I just signed up to complain about this new homepage. I absolutely hate it. I don't care to vote on news. I just read the news! If I wanted to talk about news, I'd go to a message board to do so! Before, the layout and organization of the homepage was really good. It gave all the top news, entertainment, sports, business in one easy to read page. Now, everything is all over the place, and looks so disorganized. I also liked that drop down 'What New' thing that popped up everytime I opened the browser. Before the homepage looked professional, now it looks like some amateur kid just thought it up, and said here, this is what looks good, what do you think. I think your homepage sucks!, and so do most of the Netscape community who used to use Netscape.com as their home page. Change it back, or I'm moving to some other web portal as my homepage!
The fact that we are able to discuss in public that we don't or do like the new Netscape.com is, in my view, a good thing. The old Netscape.com was a Time Warner dump. The CNN headlines changed and that was about it. You can easily recreate the features from the old Netscape.com that you like at mynetscape.netscape.com.
Problems with the new Netscape.com:
As a portal it lacks pertinent content. A portal (home) page should be clean and well organized, with easy access to headlines, the different departments maintained by the host, and links to things like markets, weather, sports and social pages. The new Netscape.com lacks cohesiveness and clean, easy to access content maintained by Netscape.
Since Netscape.com is the default portal of the Netscape browser (just like MSN.com is the default portal for IE), the makers of Netscape should recognize they have a responsibility to those who use their browser to provide this content. After all, the cost of the browser is free, but the revenue derived from the portal is what finances the software development. Since it is apparent this content is not on the Netscape.com web site, the Netscape as a portal and Netscape as a browser are being eliminated.
Problems with the new Netscape.com
Part 2
As a news service it lacks credibility.
"News" stories are submitted by users. It was explained to me that, unlike other news services which are required to undergo editorial review, the validity of news stories submitted to this site are reviewed by readers (i.e. the comment section). So it is entirely possible that one could write a "news" story about the Moon Flu which is sweeping through NASA because of a previously undetected bacteria in moon rocks....and it could appear headlined right along "real" news stories!
Since there is no editorial review other than the "anchors" deciding to post a submitted story, there is no accountability for reporting accurate or even REAL news. The bios of the anchors reveals that most are blog writers, thus the distinction between fact and opinion is of little consequence.
Summary: News is fact, opinion is commentary. Netscape.com doesn not distinguish between the two and is thus unreliable as a news source
Basically I feel that we were hijacked. a new web page without choice of accepting it or staying with the old one. If they had done that, the whiners that complain about those not wanting it to change to this CF could have their choice too. I would have appreciated an advance notice rather than being slapped in the face with it upon opening.
