Gadgets & Tech – We have a FAQ for those of you wondering what is new with Netscape.
C.K.:
Netscape mail users can find their email here. My.Netscape is still here, as are your Stock Quotes.
We've received an overwhelming amount of feedback via our feedback form. We are working our way through responding to your emails and we apologize for any delay in responding. In the meantime, please see our FAQ (linked to above) to discover more about this New Netscape. Also, check back with this post, as I will try to answer some of the more frequently asked questions from the feedback form in this Anchor Commentary.
Here's a quick transition FAQ to supplement our regular FAQ:
1. I can't login:
- Make sure that your browser is allowing cookies from our site.
- Did you create an account? If you already had a Netscape mail or ISP account, those accounts are still active, but you will need to create a new member name and password for the new Netscape.com. To do so, use this form. After you sign up, you will receive a confirmation email with a link you must click in order to activate your account.
2. I can't register:
- Make sure that your browser is allowing cookies from our site.
- Make sure you include all required information in Section 1 when you register.
- In section 2, you do not have to select a member account picture at this time. The system will assign you a default picture and you can change it later from the settings pane of your profile page.
In section 3, Verification, make sure that you type the letters exactly as they appear. If the letters are all capitalized, you should type them in all capitalized.
- Make sure you check the box accepting the Netscape Terms of Use.
3. I registered, but never received my confirmation e-mail:
- First, if you have a spam filter enabled, check your spam folder to make sure that the email is not in there.
- In the high-demand phase post relaunch of the site, we've been getting numerous account requests and your email may just be slightly delayed. Check your email again in a few minutes.
- If you still haven't received your login, contact us via our Feedback form and we will manually activate your account and send you an email, letting you know that you can log in. Keep in mind that we have been somewhat overwhelmed with feedback and it may take some time to get to your account. We apologize for the delay.
4. I received my confirmation e-mail, but it didn't work:
- When you click on the link that you received in your email, make sure that the full URL shows up in the address bar in your browser. If not, please carefully copy and paste the full URL into your address bar.
5. I tried to reset my password, but didn't receive the e-mail:
- Please see the answer to number 3 above.
6. I tried to reset my password, I received the e-mail but it won't work:
- Please see the answer to number 4 above.
Ask any other questions you want answered in the comments to this post, and I will add them to this list.

All of us are not real computer literates and it takes some time to learn a system. Just got comfortable with Netscape and this new version blows up in my face. System restore will not help either, I've tried. Even made an attempt to use "My Netscape" as home page and it blew up because it said I was not allowing cookies. Everything I checked had cookies enabled. Now I can't get back to the "New" Netscape home page without doing a reload a couple of times. Looks like I will be shopping around for another service provider after all.
It seems Netscape, does not intends of returning back to its old format.
So I suggest, we ALL find a new Browser (LIKE GOOGLE, they have e-mail),,,and change over. Netscape, which is own by AOL, who I hated, is forcing us to use something that sucks,, IM NOT A BLOGGER,,, that what Netscape has turned into.
If they lose customers, maybe then they will take us serious.

With so many of us hating the new ( Lousy) look I wonder why Netscape would continue with it. I dont think its user friendly. It is a confusing look, sad since I had been loyal to Netscape right from the start, but this turns me off. I have switched to Yahoo home page till Netscape switches it back to the old format or at least gives us the choice of choosing a format.

"The new Netscape is a terrible disappointment. I don't know what I'll use for my homepage, now. But, it won't be this".....I totally Agree!!!!!
The old Home page was a summarization of everything on one page...I used to think this is great! Now...I'm thinking this is terrible!
The old home page saved me tremendous time in the morning and throughout the day, kept me up to date on what is going on in the world as a quick review in whatever, I selected to read, with this being said, Not everybody wants to read the same thing running down a long list of activities.
Now...I lost interest by losing precious time in trying to find wherever everything is located and as to what's going on in the world by trying to use your site.
Please go back to the old format soon before, I and everybody else decides to go searching for or switch onto your competitor.
The more users that register, the less "negative" comments like the ones above will be posted. This is a forward thinking site. And, I totally agree: aol.com is just what the old Netscape used to be with a different style and color format, so it "seems" different. I am switching back to Netscape because of this change... as my browser (8.1 is great) and as my home-page! The fact that it integrates with AOL (via Screen Name service) is definitely a plus!
Hey CK...
Is netscape ever going back to the OLD MAIL?
The mail you all have had for the last year is LOUSY!
I hate the teeny tiny little area surronded by tons of ads. You have to constantly scroll and half the time you can't get to the next page because the blue arrow never shows up!
I have asked via "feedback" and never hear anything back!
I agree with the majority (meaning: ALL) comments posted here - THIS VERSION IS LOUSY!! I see no benefit to the reformat. How can you possibly find relevant news or information on this page? I have been a loyal Netscape user since they started, even though I hated what they did to their email service last year. This is the final straw. I will be switching to Yahoo for my homepage from now on. I recommend that everyone else does the same. Perhaps if their ad revenue plummets THEN they will bring the old version back!
I am used to a quick review of the news and current events with morning coffee. It is sad to see that Netscape is choosing this format and I doubt there have been many positive reviews. Like many of the above I am actively looking for a new homepage. Just take a poll and I think the outcome will be obvious.
At least give us the option "old look" or new.
Hi CK.. Thanks for your response. However like almost all on this forum the reason I vented my frustration was the old site was GOOD, BETTER and BEST as compared to the new site. It had everything on one page which was like customized for the masses. Any one could pick his/her choice. Does that make any sense and if it does switch back.
As per your suggestion I tried aol.com, never liked AOL am not a member of AOL and did not like the site. As per isp.netscape.com it is close to the old site but not the same its a substitute. Anyway I have been loyal to Netscape right from the start however when someone does not listen to their loyal friends then a time comes to say goodbye to that friend. I just cannot understand why you cannot give the users a choice when they log in as to which site they want to go to.
If Netscape does not go back or offer the choice I will free up my hard drive by removing Netscape and just keep Internet Explorer. Goodbye.

To keep on topic of Frequently Asked Questions:
Is New.Netscape.com a reliable News Service?
No.
The software that runs New.Netscape.com was written under the direction of the same man who wrote a popular blogging software whos company was purchased by AOL. Most of the "anchors" are bloggers themselves. Netscape was careful to call these people "anchors" and not "editors", since the connotation of an editor gives a semblance of responsibility for accuracy. A large percentage of the stories posted are links to a blog. A blog does not have to report accurately or lack prejudice, thus the content is "commentary".
New.Netscape.com does not distinguish between "factual" and "commentary", thus it is an unreliable source for factual news.
To keep on topic of Frequently Asked Questions:
Is New.Netscape.com committed to open commentary on stories of interest?
No.
Several stories which had become the focal point for negative commentary have been pulled by the powers that be at New.Netscape.com. Other popular stories have been stripped of dozens of comments deemed critical of the software designers and management of New.Netscape.com for their obvious disregard for the millions of former users (811 million page views a month). Thus it should not be expected that any comment which is critical of the authorities at New.Netscape.com, the anchors, the new format, or the blogger community in general will be allowed to be posted with any story.
To keep on topic of Frequently Asked Questions:
Is New.Netscape.com really intended to be a portal for pertinent information?
No.
New.Netscape.com was intentionally designed this way to demolish the old portal, as one of the software developers commented. While decisions could be made to the contrary, it appears the old idea of supporting a portal to the internet (or "home page" if you will) is trying to be eliminated. Maintaining real content such as news services, stories and features is time consuming and costs money. Maintining a site where the news stories are stripped from other web sites (and submitted by unpaid users) is cheap and takes no time or editorial oversite at all! Thus it makes good business sense for New.Netscape.com to get out of the portal or home page business and only serve up commentary (see FAQ "Is New.Netscape.com a reliable news service")
To keep on topic of Frequently Asked Questions:
Is my Netscape Browser being phased out?
Maybe.
Developing and maintaining an Internet Browser costs a lot of money. When this software is then distributed for free the costs associated with programming have to be recouped somewhere. In the past Netscape and Microsoft have funded these programs through revenues from advertisers. The logic being that if the default home page or gateway to the internet is set to the software maker's own web page, then millions of people will see the ads and content. The more page views (and thus ad views) the more revenue.
Since New.Netscape.com is not intended to be a portal of pertinent information and gateway to the internet, it makes little sense to continue to develop and support browser software since the primary source of funding is through a gateway. As such, Netscape the browser may be eliminated in the not so distant future.
To keep on topic of Frequently Asked Questions:
"Is there any hope that the Old Netscape.com will come back?"
No.
A slimmed down version has been posted at isp.netscape.com, but as Netscape dumps support for it's award winning web browser, also look for it to divest it's interests in being an Internet Service Provider. The page mentioned is currently maintained for those dial-up customers still with Netscape.net and as such reflects less content. So if you are looking for the feature rich experience you were accustomed to with Old.Netscape.com, you would do well to follow the advice given by many of the anchors and other bloggers attributed as top contributors and switch home pages to a site which concentrates on providing original content. Jason and his crew are committed to transforming Netscape.com into a mainstream forum for web bloggers and others wishing to get their opinions out, and content just doesn't fit into that scheme.
To keep on topic of Frequently Asked Questions:
"Can't Old Netscape and New Netscape be integrated? Why does it have to be one or the other?"
Yes. But that's not the point.
Old Netscape was bought by AOL. Much can be said about AOL but that's off-topic. AOL also bought Weblogs Inc. from Jason Calacanis. Jason is the architech of New.Netscape.com. So now Jason works for someone else, and when you are used to calling the shots it bites taking orders. So he got half a billion dollars for his company, but no one outside of bloggerdom has heard of Weblogs. Netscape has brand name recognition. So why not transform Netscape.com into the biggest blog forum in history? That would mean out with the old, so integration was never considered (after all, it only took 3 months to put this together) So when the site loses millions of dollars, Jason can buy it back from AOL and have Weblogs AND Netscape brand name! By integrating, such a coup de gras would not be possible.
I added the to the address and got the old page BUT couldn't access my e-mail!!!!I COULD READ ALL the above or the FAQ but I DON'T want to I just want everything to go back to the way it was because I AM VERY BUSY!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I have the time and the desire to find a new browser or page I will...but not NOW
Your new format is making me change my homepage back to the big "Y". Nobody would argue that innovation is the most important ingredient of progress, but good innovation implies easily perceived improvement that quickly overcomes the inevitable discomfort brought about by change. I spent much more time that I would have spent with any other product trying to find those improvements in your new format, and failed miserably. Good bye my long time homepage, good luck to you.

The new Netscape sucks, and it really blows too. CHANGE IT BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We don't want the "AOL" homepage. We want the ORIGINAL Netscape back. A loyal user since 1995. WTF? You should have run the beta version, then offered to the ones who really want it, cause I am thinking that 99% DON'T want it. GIVE US BACK OUR OLD NETSCAPE!!...
